Igniting Youth Innovation and Employability in Mombasa

Employability skills have become more crucial than ever for young people. These are the foundational abilities such as communication, problem-solving, adaptability, digital literacy, and teamwork that prepare individuals not just to secure jobs, but to thrive in diverse work environments. With rapid changes in technology, markets, and the global economy, the youth are hungry for guidance, mentorship, and platforms that empower them to gain and apply these essential skills.

Yet, despite the hunger, many young people in Africa still face barriers to accessing quality training, digital tools, and work opportunities.

A Day of Connection, Skills, and Inspiration

In partnership with Yoma and Close the Gap Kenya, we hosted the Yoma Youth Networking Day – Mombasa Chapter, a vibrant and impactful event designed to empower youth through knowledge, tools, and real-world connections. The day brought together a diverse group of young people for an experience that was rich with insight, fun, and actionable learning.

Throughout the sessions, youth were introduced to the Yoma platform, a digital space that allows them to discover learning and earning opportunities, build digital CVs through badges, and explore career paths tailored to their interests and skillsets.

Vanessa, the Hub Coordinator at Yoma, captured the spirit of the event when she said:
Employability skills are no longer a nice-to-have they are essential. The Yoma platform is making it easier for young people to become employable, gain crucial skills, and be ready for the world of work. Platforms like these are a game changer.

The event during a panel discussion also highlighted the importance of access to technology as a critical enabler of youth growth. Phillip Kairu, Sales and Relationship Coordinator at Close the Gap Kenya, emphasized this, stating:
Affordable IT is at the heart of accelerating growth both for young entrepreneurs and those building careers. When youth have the tools, they can innovate, connect, and build solutions that transform communities.

Inspiring the youth to take initiative and embrace innovation, Paul Akwabi, Executive Director of Tech Kidz Africa, added:
It’s not about waiting for the perfect moment. It’s about doing the best you can with what you have right now. If you stay committed and visible, someone will notice your talent and hard work. That’s how doors open.

Beyond the powerful talks, the day was full of energy, youth engaged in lively conversations, danced, networked, and left the space feeling recharged and more confident about their next steps. We’re proud to have hosted this initiative in Mombasa and remain committed to creating spaces that connect youth to opportunities, tools, and like-minded youths.
